Microchipping: A Story

Many years ago before children and even marriage, my future wife and I returned home from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home with our first cat, Jackson. He was so confident and friendly in the cattery; however he hid under the table for two days before quietly growing in confidence. We kept him indoors for several weeks before letting him venture outside.

Many years ago before children and even marriage, my future wife and I returned home from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home with our first cat, Jackson. He was so confident and friendly in the cattery. However, he did hide under the table for two days before quietly growing in confidence! We kept him indoors for several weeks before letting him venture outside. I had bought him a quick-release collar, knowing the damage a collar could potentially do. I carefully placed his new ‘safe’ collar on him, only to witness him tuck his paw gently inside and throw it on the floor. He glared back at me as we repeated the process; he would not wear a collar, ever. He had however been microchipped. Microchipping your pet is now a legal requirement for both cats and dogs.

Why microchip your pet?

Microchipping gave me the confidence to let him out gallivanting knowing that whatever happened outside, he could be traced back to me. Personally, I would not let my cat (or dog) outdoors without this peace of mind. As of April 6th, 2016 it will be compulsory to have your dog microchipped. Despite the imminent laws, microchipping remains the most reliable way to reunite lost pets to their owners.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a small device, the same size as a grain of rice. It contains a unique number that can be read by a scanner. This number is entered into a national database along with the owners’ details. Microchips are implanted just below the skin through a needle. When carried out by an experienced person, such as a Veterinary Surgeon, it causes minimal discomfort and is similar to a vaccination. We offer Slimline Microchips with instant online registration including a month’s free Petplan insurance.

Providing owners keep their contact details up to date, the system works perfectly. As a pet owner myself, the peace of mind microchipping provides is priceless.
