FAQs: Frequently asked questions

Is vaccination really necessary? How often should I use flea treatment? Why does my dog scratch all the time? These are just some of the questions we’re regularly asked so for answers to these, amongst other popular queries, you need look no further.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Vaccination

Is vaccination really necessary?
We feel appropriate annual vaccination is essential. Without vaccines, numerous fatal diseases in both cats and dogs would rapidly become commonplace. Many puppies and kittens would not reach adulthood let alone old age.

When should I vaccinate my new puppy or kitten?
Kittens are vaccinated from 8 weeks with a 2nd vaccination due 3-4 weeks later and puppies may be vaccinated from 6 weeks old. Puppies require a 2nd vaccination 2-4 weeks later but your puppy must be at least 10 weeks old for his 2nd vaccine to be effective.

Preventative Care

How often should I use flea treatment?
Flea treatment is recommended in both dogs and cats on a monthly basis. However, there are numerous options whether it is straightforward flea treatment or combined with worm or tick treatment. We always aim to tailor flea and worm treatments to each individual animal.

When should I neuter my pet dog or cat?

  1. We recommend neutering cats at 5-6 months old. This is the optimum time to prevent health problems later in life.
  2. Male dogs: We do not necessarily recommend the neutering of all male dogs. It is dependent on their behaviour and circumstances, so we recommend that this should be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
  3. Female dogs: We recommend the neutering of all female dogs to prevent serious health problems that can occur later in life, in addition to unwanted pregnancies.
  4. For dogs under 40kg (adult weight): 2-3mths after 1st season and when ideally over 1yr old.
  5. For dogs over 40kg (adult weight): Above 18mths old.

Can ticks harm my pet and how do I prevent them?
Several tick-borne diseases are present in the UK and Lyme Disease has been diagnosed in this area. Although these are rare they are potentially very serious illnesses. We now have numerous options to prevent ticks from regular spot-on treatments to collars giving up to 8 months of protection.

How does microchipping work?
A microchip is a rice grain-sized implant inserted just under the skin. It contains a unique number that we register with a national pet database who we ensure hold all your contact details.

Dental

Why does my cat’s or dog’s breath smell?
Bad breath or halitosis is usually suggestive of dental disease. It is an indication your pet is in need of a dental check. We have all the equipment and expertise at both surgeries necessary to treat but also the knowledge to help you prevent dental problems.

Behavioural

Why does my dog scratch all the time?
Common causes include parasites (fleas and mites), bacterial infections and allergic skin disease. Whatever the cause, itchiness may cause severe discomfort and can be extremely debilitating to both pet and owner alike.

How much should my dog or cat drink?
Water intake is influenced by a number of factors from diet through to exercise levels and metabolism. As a guide, an average cat or dog should drink approximately 50mls per kilogram per day (200mls per day for a 4kg cat or 500mls for a 10kg dog). Excessive water intake is double this at 100mls per kg per day. If you have any concerns whatsoever, please contact one of our surgeries immediately. An increase in water intake can be suggestive of several (potentially) serious illnesses.

Here are some of the most common questions (FAQs) asked by our pet owners covering preventative care, through to travel. These FAQs are also available in the advice section of our website.

Travel

Can I take my pet abroad?
Travelling to the EU with your pet has never been easier. As of 1st January 2012, your pet requires a microchip, a Rabies vaccination and a Pet Passport. 3 weeks later they can travel and the only requirement on your return to the UK is tapeworm treatment applied 1-5 days before re-entry. Please contact either surgery for further advice.
